Listen to this article

“They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.”

Job 41:17 (KJV) says: “They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.”

This verse is a part of the description of the Leviathan, a powerful and mythical sea creature mentioned in the Book of Job. The Leviathan is described in great detail in Job 41, showcasing its strength and invincibility. In this particular verse, the emphasis is on the impenetrable scales of the Leviathan and how tightly they are interlocked.

Context: The Book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of human suffering, the nature of God, and the concept of divine justice. Job, the central character, undergoes severe trials and losses, and engages in a series of conversations with his friends and God. In Job 41, God describes the awe-inspiring characteristics of the Leviathan to demonstrate His sovereign power and wisdom to Job.

Leviathan: In ancient Near Eastern mythology, the Leviathan is often associated with chaos, the sea, and a symbol of primeval power. In the Book of Job, God uses the Leviathan as an example to illustrate His unrivaled authority and might, contrasting it with the limitations and vulnerability of humanity.

Interlocking Scales: Job 41:17 highlights the remarkable attribute of the Leviathan’s scales. The verse suggests that the scales are tightly joined together, making it impossible to separate them. This imagery emphasizes the creature’s impenetrable defense and invincibility.

Symbolic Meaning: The description of the Leviathan’s scales in Job 41:17 serves as a metaphor for God’s sovereign control over creation. It symbolizes the insurmountable power and strength of God, which surpasses human understanding. It also emphasizes the futility of human attempts to challenge or overcome divine authority.

  • Overall, Job 41:17 presents a vivid image of the Leviathan’s unassailable defense, highlighting God’s unrivaled power. It invites us to trust in His sovereignty, seek refuge in Him, and acknowledge our limitations in comparison to His greatness.
