Job 5:26
Thou shalt come to thy graue in a full age, like as a shocke of corne commeth in, in his season. Job 5:26 (KJV)
The book of Job tells the story of a man named Job who experienced great suffering, including the loss of his children, wealth, and health. Job’s three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, come to comfort him but also engage in a dialogue about the cause of Job’s suffering.
In Job 5:26, Eliphaz the Temanite—one of Job’s friends—speaks during a conversation about suffering and the ways of God. He addresses Job about the blessings that come to those who seek God’s wisdom and follow His ways.
In this verse Eliphaz assures Job that if he remains faithful to God, he will have a long and fulfilling life. The metaphor used is that of a shock of corn (a sheaf of grain) coming in its season. Just as the corn reaches full maturity and is harvested at the right time, so too will Job come to his grave in a full age when the appointed time comes.
This verse reflects the Old Testament belief that a long life was often seen as a blessing from God. It conveys the idea that a person who lives a righteous and God‑fearing life could expect to enjoy the fullness of their years and experience a peaceful death in old age.
However, the book of Job also challenges this understanding. Job’s story raises questions about the relationship between suffering and righteousness, showing that sometimes righteous individuals may experience great trials without necessarily having sinned. The book ultimately emphasizes the mystery of God’s ways and the importance of trust and faith in the midst of suffering.
Job 5:26 reminds us of the significance of living a righteous life and seeking God’s wisdom. While the verse may not guarantee a long life for every individual, it highlights the general principle that following God’s ways leads to blessings. It encourages us to trust in God’s timing and purpose, even in the face of difficulties.
The verse also reminds us that life has seasons, just as the corn ripens in its own time. We should strive to make the most of each season and trust that God’s timing is perfect. Whether in times of abundance or hardship, we can find comfort in knowing that God has a plan for our lives and that our ultimate hope lies in Him.
