Job 9:33

Posted on 18 May at 15:20

“Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.”

Context:The book of Job is a profound exploration of human suffering and the nature of God’s sovereignty. Job, a righteous man, faced extreme adversity, including the loss of his wealth, health, and the death of his children. Throughout the book, Job wrestles with deep questions about the meaning of suffering and seeks to understand God’s role in his afflictions.

Verse Analysis:“Neither is there any daysman betwixt us”: In this verse, Job expresses his longing for a mediator or an arbiter between himself and God. He recognises the vastness and greatness of God, acknowledging that there is a great gulf between a finite human being like himself and the infinite and transcendent God.

“That might lay his hand upon us both”:Job desires someone who can bridge the gap between God and himself, someone who can represent both parties and bring reconciliation. He seeks an intermediary who can understand his human perspective and also have the authority to touch God on his behalf.

Key Themes and Lessons:

Human Limitations and the Majesty of God:Job’s words reflect the awe and humility he experiences in the presence of God’s greatness. He recognises that as a human being, he is unable to fully comprehend or bridge the gap between himself and the Almighty. This highlights the vast difference between the limited understanding of humanity and the infinite wisdom of God.

The Need for a Mediator:Job longs for a mediator or an advocate who can stand between him and God, to represent both parties and bring them together. This foreshadows the need for a true mediator who can reconcile humanity with God, ultimately fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, who became the mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5).

The Yearning for Divine Intervention:Job’s cry for a daysman reflects the deep longing within the human heart for someone who can understand our pain, advocate for us, and intervene in our situations. As believers, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus Christ fulfils this role, interceding on our behalf before God the Father (Hebrews 7:25).

  • Recognising Our Human Limitations:Like Job, it’s essential to acknowledge our limited understanding and wisdom in comparison to God’s infinite knowledge. This helps cultivate humility and a sense of dependency on God, trusting that He knows what is best for us even in times of suffering.
  • Embracing Jesus as Our Mediator:Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can experience reconciliation with God. He is the ultimate mediator who understands our human struggles, represents us before God, and offers us forgiveness, grace, and access to the Father.
  • Seeking Divine Intervention:Just as Job longed for an advocate, we can bring our concerns, burdens, and requests to God in prayer. Knowing that we have a compassionate Saviour who intercedes for us can bring comfort and hope in the midst of challenging circumstances.
