“Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly”

Context:The book of Joel is one of the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. Joel prophesied during a time when the land of Judah was experiencing a devastating locust plague and drought. He called the people to repentance and encouraged them to turn back to the Lord.

The significance of the trumpet:In this verse, the prophet Joel urges the blowing of the trumpet in Zion. The trumpet had various symbolic meanings in the Bible. It was used to announce significant events, gather people together, and signal a call to battle. Here, the blowing of the trumpet is a call to attention and action.

Zion and its significance:Zion refers to the city of Jerusalem, specifically the hill on which the temple was built. In a broader sense, Zion symbolizes the dwelling place of God and represents His presence among His people. The call to blow the trumpet in Zion implies that the message being proclaimed is of great importance and carries divine authority.

Sanctify a fast:Along with blowing the trumpet, Joel instructs the people to sanctify a fast. Fasting involves abstaining from food or certain activities for a spiritual purpose. It is a symbol of humility, repentance, and seeking God’s guidance and intervention. By sanctifying a fast, the people are called to set themselves apart and prepare their hearts to meet with God.

Call a solemn assembly:A solemn assembly is a gathering of people for a sacred or serious purpose. It is a time of collective worship, repentance, and seeking God’s face. In calling for a solemn assembly, Joel emphasizes the seriousness and urgency of the situation. It is a time for the entire community to come together, acknowledging their sins and seeking the Lord’s mercy and restoration.

Application to believers today:While Joel 2:15 was specifically addressed to the people of Judah during a particular historical context, there are valuable principles we can apply to our lives today. We can learn from this verse the importance of:

  • a. Responding to God’s call:The blowing of the trumpet signifies a call to action. As believers, we need to be attentive to God’s voice and respond promptly when He calls us to a particular task, whether it be repentance, obedience, or service.
  • b. Seeking God through fasting:Fasting can be a powerful spiritual discipline that helps us draw closer to God. It demonstrates our humility, dependence, and desire for His intervention in our lives. By setting aside time for fasting, we can seek God’s guidance, experience spiritual breakthroughs, and deepen our relationship with Him.
  • c. Coming together in unity:The call for a solemn assembly reminds us of the significance of gathering as the body of Christ. It highlights the importance of communal worship, repentance, and corporate prayer. When we join together in unity, seeking God’s face, we can experience His presence, receive His blessings, and find encouragement from fellow believers.

In summary, Joel 2:15 serves as a powerful call to action, repentance, and seeking God. It emphasizes the need for individual and collective response to God’s call, highlighting the importance of fasting and gathering in unity as we seek His presence and direction in our lives.
