John 1:45

Listen to this article

“Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Context:John 1:45 is a part of the Gospel of John, which introduces Jesus as the Word made flesh, the light of the world, and the Lamb of God. In this verse, Philip encounters Nathanael and shares the news of finding the Messiah, whom the Old Testament Scriptures prophesied.

Philip’s Encounter:Philip, one of the disciples of Jesus, finds Nathanael and tells him about Jesus of Nazareth. It’s worth noting that Philip was called by Jesus directly and had experienced a personal encounter with Him (John 1:43-44).

The Prophetic Expectation:Philip declares that Jesus is the one “of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write.” This statement reflects the anticipation among the Jewish people regarding the coming Messiah. The Law of Moses (the Torah) and the Prophets contained numerous prophecies about the promised Savior, pointing to Jesus as the fulfillment of those prophecies.

Jesus of Nazareth:Philip specifically identifies Jesus as “Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” This description highlights Jesus’ earthly identity, emphasizing His human nature and His association with the town of Nazareth. However, it’s important to note that Jesus is not just an ordinary man but the Son of God, the long-awaited Messiah.

Nathanael’s Response:Nathanael responds skeptically, saying, “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” This reaction reveals the prevailing opinion at that time, as Nazareth was not considered a significant or esteemed place. Nathanael’s doubt prompts Philip to invite him to “come and see” for himself (John 1:46).

Application:John 1:45 reminds us of the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies in the person of Jesus Christ. It underscores the importance of recognizing and proclaiming Jesus as the long-awaited Savior. Philip’s approach of inviting Nathanael to “come and see” also teaches us the significance of personal encounters with Jesus and the transformative power of experiencing Him firsthand.

  • Overall, John 1:45 highlights the fulfillment of prophecy in Jesus Christ and the need for personal encounters with Him to truly grasp His identity and significance.
