John 10:39
Therefore they sought againe to take him: but hee escaped out of their hand, John 10:39 (KJV)
Context: To better understand this verse, let’s consider the broader context of John 10. In this chapter, Jesus presents Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. He emphasizes His intimate relationship with His followers and the security they have in Him.
Opposition and Escape: In John 10:39 we see that Jesus’ opponents sought to seize Him once again. This follows earlier confrontations with the Jewish religious leaders, including the attempt recorded in John 8:59. In this instance Jesus managed to escape from their grasp, indicating that His appointed time for crucifixion had not yet arrived and His earthly ministry was still ongoing.
Divine Protection: The fact that Jesus escaped from their hands highlights the divine protection surrounding Him until the appointed time of His crucifixion. It underscores the sovereignty and power of God in preserving Jesus and ensuring that His mission would be accomplished according to God’s plan.
God’s Timing: Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus repeatedly declares that His hour has not yet come (e.g., John 2:4; John 7:30; John 7:34; John 8:20). This emphasizes the importance of God’s timing in Jesus’ ministry and ultimately in the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan. Jesus’ escape from His opponents in this verse further demonstrates that His hour had not arrived, and His work on earth was not yet finished.
Application: While this verse primarily pertains to Jesus’ specific circumstances, we can draw spiritual lessons for our own lives. God’s timing is crucial for each believer. When we face opposition or challenges, if it is not yet God’s appointed time for us to confront them, He will protect and preserve us until the right moment. This verse reminds us to trust in God’s sovereignty and perfect timing, even when difficulties arise.
