John 11:43

Listen to this article

And when hee thus had spoken, he cryed with a loude voice, Lazarus, come foorth. John 11:43 (KJV)

Context: John 11:43 is found in the account of the resurrection of Lazarus. Lazarus was a dear friend of Jesus who had fallen ill and died. Jesus arrived at the tomb where Lazarus was buried and, after speaking with Martha, Lazarus’s sister, he performed a mighty miracle by raising Lazarus from the dead.

Jesus’ declaration: In this verse we see Jesus standing before the tomb, lifting up his eyes, and after speaking with Martha, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” This powerful command brings Lazarus back to life, demonstrating Jesus’s authority over death.

Significance of the voice: The loud cry underscores the magnitude of his divine authority. By speaking loudly, Jesus ensures that even after four days the dead would hear his voice and respond, highlighting the power behind the command.

Resurrection power: The resurrection of Lazarus is one of the most extraordinary miracles performed by Jesus during his ministry. It not only revealed his divine power but also foreshadowed his own resurrection, which would take place later. Through this miracle, Jesus demonstrated that he has power over death and can bring life even to those who are dead.

Application for believers: John 11:43 reminds believers of the power and authority of Jesus. It assures us that Jesus is not only the giver of life but also the conqueror of death. As followers of Christ, we can find comfort and hope in knowing that just as Jesus called Lazarus from the tomb, he also calls us out of darkness into newness of life.

Spiritual significance: This verse carries spiritual symbolism as well. Lazarus, who represents humanity, was dead and bound by grave clothes. When Jesus called him out, it mirrors the way Jesus calls us out of spiritual death and sets us free from the bondage of sin. It signifies the new life we receive in Christ when we respond to his call and accept him as our Lord and Savior.
