For some of them thought, because Iudas had the bagge, that Iesus had sayd vnto him, Buy those things that wee haue need of against the feast: or that he should giue some thing to the poore. John 13:29 (KJV)

For some

of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy

those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. John 13:29 (KJV)

This verse is part of the narrative in the Gospel of John where Jesus is sharing the Last Supper with His disciples. It follows Jesus’ prediction that one of the twelve would betray Him and the identification of Judas Iscariot as the betrayer. Judas was in charge of the money bag, and the disciples heard Jesus speak to him.

In this particular verse the disciples thought that Jesus had instructed Judas to buy supplies needed for the upcoming Passover feast or to give something to the poor. The text records only their mistaken assumption; there is no indication that Jesus actually gave such a command.

The passage mentions Jesus’ concern for the poor, a theme that runs throughout His ministry. However, in this moment it is the disciples—not Jesus—who assume He might have directed Judas to distribute something to the needy. Their inference reflects their awareness of Jesus’ compassion but also their limited grasp of His immediate purpose.

The verse also reveals a misunderstanding on the part of Judas and the other disciples. They did not comprehend the true nature of Jesus’ instruction to Judas. Rather than recognizing the weightier spiritual significance of the Last Supper and the impending betrayal, they interpreted Jesus’ words in a material and temporal context.

It is worth noting that Jesus’ true intention was not related to earthly concerns but to the forthcoming betrayal by Judas. This verse therefore serves as a precursor to the revelation of Judas’ betrayal that follows in the subsequent verses. Overall, John 13:29 reminds us of the disciples’ limited understanding of Jesus’ words, sets the stage for the unfolding events leading up to His crucifixion, and highlights the complexities and challenges that surrounded His ministry.
