John 14:13
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
This verse is part of a larger discourse by Jesus to His disciples in the upper room before His crucifixion. In this passage, Jesus comforts His disciples and prepares them for His departure. He assures them that they can have confidence in their prayers and emphasizes the importance of praying in His name.
Context:To understand the significance of John 14:13, it is crucial to consider the context. Jesus is addressing His disciples who are troubled by the news of His impending departure. He speaks of going to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house and emphasizes that they know the way to where He is going. Thomas then asks how they can know the way, to which Jesus responds with the well-known statement, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). It is in this context that Jesus assures them of the power of prayer in His name.
Asking in His name:The phrase “in my name” is significant in this verse. It implies that the disciples are to approach the Father in prayer, invoking the authority and character of Jesus Christ. It is not merely a formula to be recited at the end of a prayer, but rather a recognition of our unity with Christ and an acknowledgement of His authority and lordship over our lives. Praying in Jesus’ name means aligning our requests with His will and seeking what would bring glory to God.
God’s response:Jesus states that whatever His disciples ask in His name, He will do. It is important to note that this promise is not a blank check for selfish desires or material gain. Instead, it is conditioned upon praying according to God’s will and seeking what brings glory to Him. When we align our prayers with God’s purposes and seek His glory, we can have confidence that He hears us and will respond in His wisdom and timing.
The Father glorified in the Son:Jesus concludes the verse by stating that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Prayer, when offered in Jesus’ name and in alignment with God’s will, brings glory to the Father. It acknowledges our dependence on God and His power to answer our prayers. As our prayers are answered and God’s faithfulness is evident, it brings honor and glory to Him.
