John 16:11
“Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”
Context:This verse is part of a larger discourse where Jesus is preparing His disciples for His impending departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit. In this particular portion, Jesus speaks about the role of the Holy Spirit in convicting the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.
To understand the meaning of John 16:11, it’s important to consider its context. Let’s explore the surrounding verses:
John 16:7-11 (KJV):
“7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”
In these verses, Jesus is assuring His disciples that although His physical presence will no longer be with them, He will send the Comforter, referring to the Holy Spirit, to be with them and guide them. The Holy Spirit will fulfil several roles, including convicting the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.
Regarding judgment, Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit will convict the world because the prince of this world (referring to Satan, the ruler of the world system opposed to God) is judged. This statement points to the victory Jesus achieved through His death and resurrection. By overcoming sin and death, Jesus dealt a decisive blow to Satan’s power and authority. The judgment of the prince of this world signifies that his dominion is ultimately defeated.
This verse underscores the contrast between the authority of Satan, who holds temporary power in the world, and the ultimate authority of God. It emphasises that the Holy Spirit will expose the world’s faulty standards and systems of judgment, revealing the truth and righteousness of God’s judgment.
