John 17:22
Context:John 17 is part of Jesus’ high priestly prayer, which he prayed just before his crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus prayed for himself, his disciples, and all believers who would come after them. John 17:22 is part of Jesus’ prayer for the unity of his followers.
Meaning and Significance:a. Glory Given: Jesus acknowledges that the glory given to him by the Father, which he had from eternity, he has now given to his disciples. This “glory” refers to the divine nature, authority, and attributes of God. By sharing his glory, Jesus imparts a sense of divine presence and power to his followers.
b. Unity: Jesus desired that his disciples and all believers would be united. This unity is not merely external or organisational but is deeply spiritual and relational. Jesus longed for the same unity that exists within the triune Godhead-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-to be manifest among his followers. It is a unity based on love, purpose, and shared relationship with God.
Practical Applications:a. Identity in Christ: As believers, we have received the glory of Christ. This means that we are partakers of his divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) and have the privilege of having a personal relationship with God. We should remember our identity as children of God and strive to live in a manner that reflects this divine glory.
b. Pursuit of Unity: Jesus’ prayer highlights the importance of unity among believers. We should strive to cultivate unity within the body of Christ, embracing and celebrating the diversity of gifts, backgrounds, and perspectives while focusing on the core beliefs that unite us. Unity should be pursued through love, humility, forgiveness, and a shared commitment to the truth of God’s Word.
c. Witness to the World: Jesus links the unity of believers to their effectiveness in the world. When the world sees the genuine love and unity displayed among followers of Christ, it becomes a powerful testimony to the truth of the Gospel. Our unity should be such that it attracts others to the message of Christ and the love of God.
d. Dependence on God: The unity Jesus prayed for is a reflection of the unity that exists within the triune Godhead. Just as the Father and the Son are one, we need to rely on the Holy Spirit and draw near to God to experience true unity. We should seek the guidance and empowerment of the Holy Spirit in all our efforts to foster unity and grow in our relationship with God.
