John 17:26

Listen to this article

“And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Context:This verse is part of a prayer that Jesus offered to God the Father before His crucifixion. The entire chapter of John 17 is known as the “High Priestly Prayer” or the “Farewell Prayer of Jesus.” In this prayer, Jesus intercedes for His disciples and also expresses His desire for unity among believers.

Let’s break down the verse for a deeper understanding:

Jesus declared the name of God to His disciples:Jesus says, “And I have declared unto them thy name.” Throughout His ministry, Jesus revealed the character and nature of God the Father to His disciples. He taught them about God’s love, mercy, holiness, and righteousness. By sharing the Father’s name, Jesus was revealing the very essence of who God is.

Jesus will continue to declare God’s name:Jesus adds, “and will declare it.” This statement implies that Jesus will continue to make known the name of God even after His earthly ministry. After His resurrection and ascension, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to empower and guide His followers. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus continues to reveal the name and nature of God to believers.

The purpose of declaring God’s name:Jesus declares God’s name so “that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.” The purpose of Jesus declaring God’s name is to enable the love of God, the same love that exists between the Father and the Son, to dwell within His disciples. Jesus desires that believers experience and manifest the love of God in their lives, showing the world the transformative power of God’s love.

Unity with God and Christ:The phrase “and I in them” expresses Jesus’ desire for believers to be united with Him and the Father. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, believers can experience a close, intimate relationship with God. This unity with God and Christ brings transformation and enables believers to bear spiritual fruit and live according to God’s will.
