John 18:21
Why askest thou me? Aske them which heard me, what I haue said vnto them: behold, they know what I said. John 18:21 (KJV)
Jesus answered him, “I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.” This verse is part of the narrative of Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. In this passage Jesus is responding to the high priest Annas, who questions Him about His disciples and His doctrine. His answer emphasizes the public character of His teaching ministry.
Jesus’ Openness: He begins by declaring that He “spake openly to the world,” highlighting that His teachings were never hidden but freely proclaimed. Throughout His earthly ministry He taught openly and freely, making His message accessible to all who were willing to listen.
Teaching in Synagogue and Temple: He further states that He taught “in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort.” The synagogue was the local place of worship and study, while the temple was the central place of worship in Jerusalem. By teaching in these public venues, Jesus reached the Jewish people where they gathered for worship and instruction.
Secret Teachings: He concludes, “and in secret have i said nothing,” affirming that He did not hold back any hidden or secret doctrine. Unlike some religious leaders of His time who concealed teachings for a select few, Jesus shared His message with transparency and clarity.
Application: This verse reminds believers of the importance of transparency and authenticity in our own lives as followers of Christ. We are encouraged to share the Gospel openly and honestly, making it accessible to others without hidden motives or secret agendas. Jesus’ example calls us to proclaim the truth publicly, ensuring that the message of salvation is clear, open, and available to all.
