John 19:7

Listen to this article

“The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”

Context:John 19 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ crucifixion. Prior to this verse, Jesus had been arrested, brought before Pontius Pilate, and was being questioned by him. The religious leaders had accused Jesus of claiming to be the Son of God, which they considered blasphemy.

The Jews’ response:In this verse, the Jews responded to Pilate’s statement that he found no fault in Jesus. They said, “We have a law, and by our law he ought to die because he made himself the Son of God.” The Jews were referring to the law found in Leviticus 24:16, which prescribed death for anyone who blasphemed the name of the Lord.

The charge of blasphemy:According to Jewish law, claiming to be the Son of God was seen as a blasphemous claim because it equated oneself with God, which was considered an offense against God’s holiness. The religious leaders accused Jesus of making this claim, leading to their demand for his death.

Fulfillment of prophecy:The Jews’ accusation and demand for Jesus’ death fulfilled various prophecies concerning the Messiah. One such prophecy can be found in Psalm 22:16 (KJV): “For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.” Jesus, as the Son of God, willingly embraced his role as the suffering Messiah, fulfilling the prophecies of his death and sacrifice for humanity’s sins.

Jesus’ identity as the Son of God:While the Jews accused Jesus of making himself the Son of God, it is important to note that Jesus indeed claimed to be the Son of God throughout his ministry. Jesus’ claim of divinity is a central aspect of Christian belief. In John’s Gospel, Jesus made several “I am” statements, such as “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35) and “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). These statements revealed his divine nature and his unique relationship with God the Father.

The significance for believers:John 19:7 underscores the opposition Jesus faced from the religious leaders and the extent they went to have him crucified. It highlights the rejection Jesus endured as he fulfilled his mission on earth. As believers, this verse reminds us of the cost of our salvation and the magnitude of God’s love, as Jesus willingly laid down his life for us.
