And when he had said this, hee breathed on them, and saith vnto them, Receiue ye the holy Ghost. John 20:22 (KJV)

Context: John 20:22 is a significant verse that takes place after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It occurs in the appearance of Jesus to His disciples on the evening of the first day of the week, the day of His resurrection.

The verse begins with “And when he had said these things,” highlighting the authority of Jesus as He speaks to His disciples. His words carry weight and significance, preparing them for what follows.

Jesus then “breathed on them.” This act of breathing symbolizes the impartation of the Holy Spirit and recalls the creation of man in Genesis 2:7, when God breathed life into Adam. Here Jesus imparts spiritual life to His followers through the Spirit.

He commands, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost,” inviting the disciples to welcome the Holy Spirit into their lives. This moment marks an empowerment and transformation, equipping them for the mission ahead.

The Holy Spirit is central to the believer’s life. The Spirit empowers and guides Christians, convicts of sin, reveals truth, and distributes spiritual gifts for service. By receiving the Spirit, the disciples were prepared to spread the Gospel with boldness.

John 20:22 also foreshadows the Day of Pentecost recorded in Acts 2, when the Holy Spirit was poured out on all believers. The earlier breath of Jesus anticipates the fuller outpouring that would inaugurate the age of the church.

Although the event was specific to the first disciples, the invitation to receive the Holy Spirit applies to all believers today. Each person is called to invite the Spirit for guidance, transformation, and empowerment in the Christian walk.

In conclusion, John 20:22 captures the moment Jesus imparts the Holy Spirit after His resurrection, signifying the empowering presence of the Spirit in believers’ lives, equipping them for service and deepening their relationship with God. The verse reminds us of the importance of receiving and embracing the Holy Spirit as we follow Christ faithfully.
