John 20:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:35
Listen to this article

“Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.”

Context:The passage takes place on the day of Jesus’ resurrection. Mary Magdalene had visited the tomb early in the morning, finding it empty. She reported this to Peter and John, who hurried to the tomb to investigate.

This verse is a part of the narrative describing the events that occurred after Jesus’ resurrection. It follows the account of Mary Magdalene encountering the empty tomb and informing Peter and John about it. In this verse, the focus is on the disciple whom Jesus loved, traditionally identified as John.

“That other disciple”: The phrase “that other disciple” refers to the disciple whom Jesus loved. Throughout the Gospel of John, the writer often refers to himself in this manner. It is widely believed that the author of the Gospel of John is John the Apostle, one of Jesus’ closest disciples.

“Which came first to the sepulchre”: John arrived at the tomb before Peter. This detail emphasizes John’s haste and eagerness to see what had happened.

“He saw, and believed”: When John reached the tomb, he saw the burial cloths lying there but did not see the body of Jesus. It’s worth noting that John’s belief here does not refer to his belief in Jesus’ resurrection, as the subsequent verses indicate that he and Peter did not fully understand the resurrection at this point. Instead, it implies that John saw the empty tomb and began to believe that something extraordinary had indeed occurred.

This verse highlights the personal experience of John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, and his initial response upon witnessing the empty tomb. It reflects the mix of confusion, wonder, and nascent belief that permeated the events surrounding Jesus’ resurrection.

As we continue reading the following verses, we see that John and Peter eventually left the tomb and returned to their homes, while Mary Magdalene remained there and encountered the resurrected Jesus, who commissioned her to tell the disciples about His resurrection.

John 20:8 serves as a pivotal moment in the resurrection account, marking the beginning of the disciples’ realization that Jesus had risen from the dead, even though their understanding of the full significance of His resurrection would develop further in the days to come.
