John 3:20

Listen to this article

For euery one that doeth euill, hateth the light, neither commeth to the light, lest his deeds should be reproued. John 3:20 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, acknowledging that Jesus was a teacher sent by God due to the miracles He performed. Jesus then explains to Nicodemus the concept of being ‘born again’ and the importance of faith in Him for eternal life.

Hatred of the Light: The verse begins by stating that everyone who does evil hates the light. The light here refers to the truth, righteousness, and the presence of Jesus Christ Himself, who is the Light of the world (John 8:12).

Avoiding the Light: The verse continues by saying that those who do evil do not come to the light. People who engage in sinful behavior often try to hide their actions, avoiding anything that might expose their wrongdoing. They may intentionally steer clear of the truth and resist encounters with Jesus, who embodies the light.

Fear of Reproof: The reason why evildoers avoid the light is that they fear their deeds will be reproved or exposed. The light of truth has the power to convict and reveal the darkness within a person’s heart.

Spiritual Application: This verse carries an important spiritual message for believers today. It reminds us that as followers of Christ, we are called to live in the light and walk in righteousness. When we live according to God’s Word, our actions will align with the truth, and we have nothing to fear from the light. However, if we choose to engage in sinful behavior, we may be tempted to avoid the light and the conviction it brings.

A Call to Repentance: The verse also highlights the need for repentance. When our sinful deeds are exposed by the light, it is an opportunity for us to acknowledge our wrongdoing, confess our sins, and turn away from them. The light of Christ offers forgiveness, redemption, and transformation for those who humbly come to Him in repentance.

Sharing the Light: Lastly, this verse reminds us of the importance of sharing the light of Christ with others. We are called to be a reflection of His truth and love in the world. By living a life characterized by righteousness and walking in the light, we can help expose the darkness and offer hope and salvation to those who are lost.

In summary, John 3:20 emphasizes the contrast between those who do evil and avoid the light, and those who walk in righteousness and embrace the truth of Christ. It serves as a reminder for believers to live transparently before God, repent of their sins, and share the light of Christ with others.
