John 3:28

“Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.”

Historical Context:John the Baptist was a prophet who came before Jesus Christ, fulfilling the prophecy found in the Old Testament (Malachi 3:1, Isaiah 40:3). He preached a message of repentance and baptized people in the Jordan River, preparing them for the arrival of the Messiah. Many people began to follow John, and he gained a considerable reputation during his ministry.

In John 3:28, John the Baptist is speaking to his disciples and others who have gathered around him. He emphasizes that he is not the Christ, referring to the Messiah, but rather that he has been sent before Him. John the Baptist wants to make it clear that he is not the central figure; his role is to prepare the way for the coming Messiah.

Humility and Witness:This verse highlights John the Baptist’s humility and self-awareness of his role. He acknowledges that his purpose is to bear witness to the true Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would come after him. John’s mission was not to exalt himself but to point others to the one who was greater than him.

Lessons for Believers:John the Baptist’s example teaches us important lessons. First, humility is a crucial virtue in serving God. John recognised his role and did not try to claim glory for himself. Instead, he directed all attention to Jesus. As followers of Christ, we should also strive to be humble and redirect the focus to Him.

Secondly, John’s dedication to his mission reminds us of the importance of preparing the way for others to encounter Jesus. We can emulate his example by faithfully sharing the good news of salvation, pointing people towards Christ, and living lives that reflect His teachings.
