John 4:27

“And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?”

Context:This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus, tired from his journey, stopped at Jacob’s well in Samaria while his disciples went into the city to buy food. The woman came to draw water, and Jesus initiated a conversation with her, revealing his knowledge about her life.

Disciples’ Marveling:In this verse, the disciples return from the city and are surprised to find Jesus talking to a Samaritan woman. At that time, Jews and Samaritans had little to do with each other due to their historical and religious differences. The disciples likely marveled because Jesus was violating social norms and engaging in conversation with someone from a despised group.

Lessons from the Disciples’ Reaction:

  • Breaking Barriers:The disciples’ surprise reflects the prevailing cultural and societal prejudices of their time. However, Jesus consistently challenged such prejudices and reached out to people irrespective of their background. As followers of Christ, we should also strive to break down barriers and treat all people with love and respect.
  • Kingdom Perspective:The disciples’ reaction indicates their limited understanding of Jesus’ mission. They were focused on the physical needs of food, while Jesus was engaged in spiritual matters, seeking to save souls. It reminds us to align our priorities with God’s perspective, valuing spiritual matters and the salvation of souls above all else.

Application to our lives:

  • Embrace Diversity:We live in a diverse world with people from different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. Instead of harboring prejudices, let us follow Jesus’ example by treating everyone with love, dignity, and respect, regardless of their differences. We should be willing to engage in meaningful conversations and show God’s love to all people.
  • Focus on the Eternal:It’s easy to get caught up in the temporal concerns of this world, such as material possessions, status, or comfort. However, Jesus reminds us to prioritise eternal matters, such as sharing the good news of salvation and helping others find spiritual nourishment. Let us invest our time, energy, and resources in activities that have eternal significance.
