John 4:5
Then commeth he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, neere to the parcell of ground that Iacob gaue to his sonne Ioseph. John 4:5 (KJV)
Context: This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus, on his way from Judea to Galilee, passes through Samaria and arrives at a city called Sychar, which is near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph (or bought at Shechem).
Historical and Geographical Background: Sychar was likely an alternative name for the city of Shechem, a prominent location in the Old Testament. Shechem was a significant city in the region of Samaria and held historical and religious significance for the Israelites. Jacob purchased a plot of land there and later gave it to his son Joseph (Genesis 33:18‑20; Genesis 48:22; Joshua 24:32).
Jesus’ Journey: The verse tells us that Jesus intentionally travels through Samaria, even though Jews usually avoided passing through that region because of their animosity toward the Samaritans. This decision reflects Jesus’ purpose to reach out to people outside the traditional Jewish community and extend God’s love and grace to all.
Fulfillment of Prophecy: The mention of the location connects to the promise made to Abraham and his descendants regarding the land of Canaan. The land given to Joseph by Jacob in Shechem represented the inheritance and blessings promised to the Israelites (Genesis 12:7; 15:18‑21). Jesus, as the Messiah, fulfills these promises and brings salvation not only to the Jews but also to the Gentiles.
Breaking Cultural Barriers: The encounter with the Samaritan woman that follows this verse highlights Jesus’ willingness to engage with those considered outside the norm or societal boundaries. Jews generally had no dealings with Samaritans, but Jesus initiates a conversation with this woman, revealing his heart for all people, regardless of their background or social status.
Application: John 4:5 teaches us important lessons about breaking down barriers and reaching out to others with the love of Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are called to overcome prejudices, cultural barriers, and personal biases to share the message of God’s grace and salvation with everyone we encounter. We should strive to demonstrate love, compassion, and acceptance toward those who are different from us, just as Jesus did.
This Bible study on John 4:5 highlights the historical context, Jesus’ purpose in passing through Samaria, the fulfillment of prophecy, breaking cultural barriers, and the application of the verse in our lives.
