John 4:52

Then inquired hee of them the houre when he began to amend: and they said vnto him, Yesterday at the seuenth houre the feuer left him. John 4:52 (KJV)

In this passage we find Jesus speaking with a nobleman or royal official from Capernaum whose son was gravely ill. The man had sent messengers to implore Jesus to come and heal his child. Jesus answered, “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe” (John 4:48, KJV), and then gave the reassuring command, “Go thy way; thy son liveth” (John 4:50, KJV) or, in another rendering, “Go your way; your son lives.”

The official believed Jesus’ words and set out for his home. While he was on the way, his servants met him and reported the precise moment of the boy’s recovery: “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” This report confirmed that the healing occurred at the exact time Jesus had spoken, demonstrating that Christ’s power can operate beyond physical presence.

The timing of the fever’s departure aligns with Jesus’ declaration, and the nobleman’s faith grew as he recognized the divine authority behind the miracle. The account highlights the importance of trusting God’s promises even when the evidence is not yet visible, and it underscores the reality that Jesus can bring about healing through His spoken word alone.

From this narrative we draw several practical lessons. First, believers are encouraged to rely on Christ’s word and promises, especially in moments of uncertainty. Second, the passage affirms that Jesus’ authority extends beyond the immediate, physical realm, confirming His ability to intervene from a distance. Finally, sharing testimonies of God’s work, as the servants did, strengthens the faith of both the teller and the listener, fostering a community that trusts in the power of the Gospel.

In summary, John 4:52 records the official’s request for confirmation, the servants’ report of the boy’s recovery, and the resulting deepening of faith. The passage calls us to trust, believe, and bear witness to the transformative power of Christ’s word.
