John 4:8

Listen to this article

“For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.”

Context:In John 4, we find the account of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus, tired from his journey, sits by Jacob’s well while his disciples go into the city to buy food. In this verse, we see the reason why the disciples had left Jesus alone.

  • Disciples’ Departure:The disciples’ departure to buy food highlights their physical needs and their focus on worldly matters. They were concerned about satisfying their hunger and attending to their immediate needs. Their actions demonstrate a limited understanding of Jesus’ mission and his spiritual teachings.

  • Jesus’ Mission:By contrast, Jesus remained at the well, engaged in a divine appointment with the Samaritan woman. He transcended physical needs and prioritized spiritual matters. Jesus often used opportunities like this to teach his disciples important lessons and reveal his divine nature.

  • Lessons for Believers:

    • Priorities:The disciples’ actions serve as a reminder for believers to evaluate their priorities. While physical needs are important, Jesus emphasizes the significance of spiritual matters. We should seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33) and align our priorities with His will.

    • Spiritual Nourishment:Just as the disciples went to buy physical food, we are encouraged to seek spiritual nourishment. The Word of God is our spiritual food (Matthew 4:4), and we need to regularly partake in its teachings and wisdom to grow in our faith.

    • Divine Appointments:Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman highlights the importance of divine appointments and the opportunities they present for sharing the Gospel and impacting lives. As believers, we should be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and seize such moments to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.

  • Application:

    • Evaluate Priorities:Take time to assess your priorities. Are you too focused on worldly matters and neglecting spiritual growth? Seek to align your priorities with God’s will and dedicate time to seek spiritual nourishment.

    • Embrace Divine Appointments:Be open to divine appointments in your daily life. God may lead you to someone in need of encouragement, guidance, or salvation. Allow the Holy Spirit to work through you to impact others positively.

    • Share the Gospel:Remember the importance of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others. Be prepared to share your faith and the hope you have in Him. Seek opportunities to introduce others to Jesus and help them grow in their relationship with Him.
