John 5:10

Listen to this article

“The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.”

Context:To understand the significance of John 5:10, we need to look at the context. In the previous verses, Jesus had healed a man who had been an invalid for 38 years. The healing took place at the pool of Bethesda, which was known for its healing properties. After being healed, the man picked up his bed and walked, which caught the attention of the Jews.

Observations:The Jews, upon seeing the man carrying his bed, confronted him about it, stating that it was not lawful for him to carry his bed on the Sabbath. In Jewish tradition, carrying a heavy load was considered work, and the Sabbath was a day of rest and worship. The Jews were strict in observing the Sabbath commandment.

Sabbath observance:The Sabbath was a crucial aspect of Jewish religious life. God commanded the Israelites to observe the Sabbath as a day of rest in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11). The principle behind the Sabbath was to set aside a day for rest, worship, and devotion to God. It was a sign of the covenant between God and His people (Exodus 31:13-17).

Jesus’ response:In the following verses (John 5:11-18), Jesus addressed the Jews’ concerns and clarified His authority as the Son of God. He declared that His Father was working, and He was also working. This statement further upset the Jews because Jesus was essentially claiming equality with God. This incident led to an increased opposition towards Jesus from the religious leaders.

  • Further study:To gain a deeper understanding of the Sabbath and its significance in the Bible, it would be beneficial to study passages like Exodus 20:8-11, Exodus 31:12-17, Deuteronomy 5:12-15, and Mark 2:23-28.

Remember, this Bible study provides an overview of John 5:10, and there are various interpretations and lessons that can be drawn from this passage. It is always beneficial to study the Bible further and seek guidance from trusted teachers and resources to gain a more comprehensive understanding.
