John 6:22

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to consider the context. In the preceding verses (John 6:1-21), Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the five thousand by multiplying five barley loaves and two small fish. Following this miracle, Jesus withdrew to a mountain by himself, and the disciples set out by boat to cross the Sea of Galilee.

Observation:In this verse, we learn that the day after the miraculous feeding, the people who had witnessed the event realized that Jesus and His disciples had departed. They noticed that only one boat remained, the one in which the disciples had sailed. Jesus had not joined them but had stayed behind.

Significance:This verse sets the stage for the discourse that follows, commonly known as the Bread of Life discourse (John 6:22-71). The people were seeking Jesus, and they realized that He had not left with His disciples. Their curiosity led them to cross the sea and search for Him.

  • Recognition of Jesus’ absence:The people noticed that Jesus was not physically present with His disciples. Similarly, in our lives, we may sometimes feel distant from Jesus or experience periods where we cannot sense His immediate presence. However, His absence does not mean He has abandoned us. He often works in ways that are not immediately apparent.
  • The pursuit of Jesus:The people actively sought Jesus after recognizing His absence. Their eagerness to find Him is a reminder of our need to earnestly seek after Him. When we encounter challenges or periods of spiritual dryness, it is crucial to seek Him diligently through prayer, studying His Word, and fellowship with other believers.
  • Material versus spiritual sustenance:The people sought Jesus not because of His teachings or miracles but because they had been physically fed through the miraculous multiplication of loaves and fishes. This sets the stage for Jesus’ later discourse on the Bread of Life, where He emphasizes the importance of seeking spiritual sustenance rather than solely focusing on temporal needs.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, it encourages us to seek Jesus not merely for temporary blessings or signs but to pursue Him for who He is and the eternal truths He teaches. We should remember that Jesus’ presence may not always be immediately evident, but He is always at work in our lives, and our pursuit of Him should be grounded in faith, trust, and a desire for spiritual growth.
