John 6:48

“I am that bread of life.”

The people who heard Jesus speaking were confused and began to grumble among themselves because Jesus claimed to be the bread that came down from heaven. They knew Him as the son of Joseph and Mary and couldn’t comprehend how He could make such a claim.

Verse 47: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

Jesus reinforces the importance of believing in Him. He affirms that whoever believes in Him has eternal life. This statement sets the stage for the declaration in verse 48.

Verse 49: “Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.”

Jesus reminds the people of their ancestors who ate manna, the bread from heaven, in the wilderness during the time of Moses. Despite that provision, their forefathers eventually died. Jesus is highlighting that the bread He offers is far superior because it leads to eternal life.
