John 6:63

Posted on 18 May at 14:04

It is the Spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing: the wordes that I speake vnto you, they are Spirit, and they are life. John 6:63 (KJV)

Context: To understand the significance of John 6:63, it is essential to consider its place within the chapter. Prior to this verse, Jesus had been teaching the crowd about the spiritual significance of the bread He miraculously provided. He explained that just as physical bread sustains the body, He is the true bread from heaven that gives eternal life to those who believe in Him.

The Spirit Gives Life: Jesus begins John 6:63 by saying, “It is the spirit that quickeneth” (KJV). The word “quickeneth” means to give life or make alive. Here Jesus emphasizes that spiritual life comes from the Holy Spirit. He contrasts this with the flesh, which He says “profiteth not,” indicating that reliance on mere physical or human effort cannot bring true and lasting spiritual life.

Words of Spirit and Life: He continues, “the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” Jesus asserts that His words carry spiritual power and impart life. He is not speaking only of the audible sounds but of the spiritual truths contained within them. These teachings reveal the nature of God, provide spiritual nourishment, and are essential for experiencing abundant and eternal life.

Spiritual Discernment: John 6:63 highlights the importance of spiritual discernment. Grasping the true meaning of Jesus’ words requires more than intellectual understanding; it demands the work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s heart and mind. The verse reminds us that the truths of God’s kingdom are spiritually discerned and received by faith.

Application: This verse teaches that true life and transformation come from the Spirit and the words of Jesus. Believers are invited to rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to understand and apply Christ’s teachings. As we study Scripture, we should seek the Spirit’s illumination to grasp the deeper spiritual truths contained within.

In summary: John 6:63 underscores the importance of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual power of Jesus’ words. It reminds us that our own efforts or reliance on the physical alone cannot bring true life. Instead, we are encouraged to seek the Spirit’s guidance and recognize that Jesus’ teachings hold the key to spiritual life and transformation.
