John 6:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”

Historical Background: The book of John is one of the four Gospels in the New Testament, and it presents a unique perspective on Jesus’ life, teachings, and ministry. The events described in John 6 take place after Jesus had performed various miracles and attracted a significant following.

The Disciple Andrew: In this verse, we encounter Andrew, who was one of the twelve apostles and a disciple of Jesus. Andrew is often depicted as a humble and resourceful disciple. He was known for bringing people to Jesus, including his brother Simon Peter, who became a prominent apostle.

The Lad with Five Loaves and Two Fishes: Andrew informs Jesus about the presence of a young boy who has five barley loaves and two small fish. This detail highlights the scarcity of food in contrast to the multitude of people gathered to hear Jesus speak. The mention of barley loaves emphasizes the humble and ordinary nature of the provisions.

The Question of Inadequacy: Andrew’s statement, “but what are they among so many?” reflects doubt and a sense of insignificance concerning the available food. Andrew recognizes the insufficiency of these provisions to meet the needs of such a vast crowd.

  • The Power of Little in God’s Hands: This verse reveals a crucial spiritual lesson. Even when faced with limited resources or seemingly insurmountable challenges, we can bring what little we have to Jesus. God has the power to multiply and use our offerings in ways beyond our imagination.
  • Faith and Obedience: Andrew’s act of bringing the boy with his loaves and fish to Jesus displays an element of faith. He did not dismiss the seemingly meager provisions but presented them to Jesus, showing trust in His abilities. Likewise, we should have faith in God’s ability to work wonders in our lives, even when faced with seemingly impossible situations.
  • The Miracle of Multiplication:

Following this conversation, Jesus performs a remarkable miracle by multiplying the loaves and fish to feed the entire crowd, with twelve baskets of leftovers gathered afterward. This miracle demonstrates Jesus’ power over creation and His ability to abundantly provide for the needs of His people.
