John 7:19

Listen to this article

“Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?”

Context:The verse is part of a larger conversation that takes place during the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. Jesus had gone up to the temple to teach, and the people were divided in their opinions about Him. Some were amazed at His teaching, while others doubted His authority.

Moses and the Law:In this verse, Jesus refers to Moses as the one who gave the law to the people of Israel. He reminds them of their adherence to the law and points out that despite their knowledge of it, they fail to keep it. The law Jesus is referring to includes the commandments, statutes, and ordinances given to Moses by God, such as the Ten Commandments and the various regulations found in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Accusation of Intent to Kill:Jesus also confronts the crowd by asking why they are seeking to kill Him. He is highlighting the inconsistency between their supposed devotion to the law and their plot against Him. Jesus’ question reveals the irony of their actions, as the law they claim to follow explicitly forbids murder.

Jesus as the Fulfillment of the Law:By drawing attention to the people’s failure to keep the law and their intent to kill Him, Jesus underscores their need for a Savior. He presents Himself as the embodiment and fulfillment of the law, the one who perfectly fulfills its requirements. Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus emphasizes His role as the Son of God who came to bring grace, truth, and salvation.

  • Application:John 7:19 serves as a reminder for believers today. It highlights the importance of examining our own lives to ensure that our actions align with our beliefs. We should strive to live in obedience to God’s Word, recognizing that Jesus not only fulfilled the law on our behalf but also empowers us through His Spirit to live according to God’s will. It is a call to self-reflection, repentance, and a deeper commitment to following Christ.
