John 7:35
“Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?”
Context:John 7 records events that took place during the Feast of Tabernacles, where Jesus was in Jerusalem teaching in the temple. In this verse, the Jews are discussing Jesus’ possible whereabouts and speculating about his intentions.
The Jews’ Question:The Jews wondered where Jesus might go that they would not be able to find him. They were perplexed by his teachings and actions and speculated about his next move. Their question reveals their desire to control Jesus and prevent him from reaching out to different groups of people.
The Dispersed among the Gentiles:The Jews’ question suggests the possibility of Jesus going to teach the Gentiles. The “dispersed” among the Gentiles refers to Jews living in various regions outside of Israel. These Jews had been scattered among different nations due to the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles. The Jews might have been wondering if Jesus intended to extend his ministry beyond the Jewish community.
Jesus’ Ministry to the Gentiles:Although the Jews speculated about Jesus’ intentions, during his earthly ministry, Jesus primarily focused on teaching and ministering to the Jewish people. However, there were instances where Jesus interacted with Gentiles and showed his love and compassion for them (e.g., healing the daughter of the Syro-Phoenician woman in Mark 7:24-30).
The Fulfillment of Prophecy:It’s interesting to note that the idea of Jesus reaching out to the dispersed among the Gentiles aligns with biblical prophecies. For example, Isaiah 11:10-12 speaks of the Messiah’s role as a banner to the nations and gathering the dispersed of Israel. This was ultimately fulfilled through the spread of the gospel to both Jews and Gentiles after Jesus’ resurrection and the subsequent establishment of the early Christian church.
