John 7:9

Listen to this article

“When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.”

John 7:9 (KJV) says, “When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.”

To better understand the context of this verse, let’s explore the surrounding verses and the broader passage:

John 7:1-10 (KJV):

“After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry because the Jews sought to kill him. Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. For there is no man that doeth anything in secret when he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, show thyself to the world. For neither did his brethren believe in him. Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. The world cannot hate you, but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast, for my time is not yet full come. When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.”

In this passage, we find Jesus in Galilee, where He had been ministering. The Feast of Tabernacles, also known as the Feast of Booths or Sukkot, was approaching in Jerusalem. Jesus’ brothers urged Him to go to Judea and show His works to the people. However, Jesus declined, stating that His time had not yet come.

The key verse, John 7:9, highlights that Jesus, after explaining to His brothers that He was not ready to go to the feast, chose to stay in Galilee rather than going to Judea. This decision was significant because Jesus was aware of the growing opposition and hostility of the Jews in Judea, who sought to kill Him (John 7:1). Jesus’ brothers did not believe in Him (John 7:5), but Jesus understood the divine timing and mission that lay ahead of Him.

This verse also reveals Jesus’ complete obedience to the will of God the Father. He had a deep awareness of God’s timing and purposes. Although Jesus eventually went to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles, He did so at the appointed time, as we see later in the chapter (John 7:14).

Furthermore, this passage presents a contrast between Jesus and His brothers. While Jesus spoke the truth and testified about the evil of the world, His brothers did not believe in Him. It underscores the rejection Jesus faced from His own family and the hostility He encountered throughout His ministry.

In summary, John 7:9 emphasizes Jesus’ obedience to God’s timing and His understanding of the opposition He faced. It showcases His commitment to fulfilling God’s purpose and His willingness to abide in Galilee until the appropriate time to journey to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. This verse also sheds light on the disbelief of Jesus’ brothers and the contrasting nature of their relationship with Him.
