John 9:15
“Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.”
Context:In John 9, Jesus heals a man who was born blind. This miraculous healing took place on the Sabbath, which caused controversy and led to the Pharisees questioning the man about his healing.
The Pharisees’ question:The Pharisees asked the man how he had received his sight. Their intention was to discredit Jesus because they viewed Him as a threat to their religious authority and traditions.
The man’s response:The man who was healed explained to the Pharisees that Jesus had put clay on his eyes and instructed him to wash, resulting in his restored vision.
Symbolism:The use of clay in this healing miracle holds symbolic significance. In the Bible, clay often represents human frailty and the need for divine intervention. By using clay, Jesus demonstrated His power and authority as the Creator who can bring restoration to brokenness.
Spiritual blindness and sight:The physical blindness of the man is a metaphor for spiritual blindness. The Pharisees, despite witnessing the miraculous healing, remained spiritually blind because they rejected Jesus’ authority. The man’s restored sight not only signifies physical healing but also represents the opening of his spiritual eyes to recognize Jesus as the Son of God.
Obedience and faith:The man’s healing required his obedience to Jesus’ command to wash his eyes. His act of obedience demonstrates faith and trust in Jesus’ words. It reminds us that faith often involves stepping out in obedience, even when we may not fully understand or see the outcome.
The contrast between the man and the Pharisees:The man who was healed had a humble and teachable spirit, whereas the Pharisees were proud and resistant to Jesus’ message. The man’s simple testimony stood in stark contrast to the Pharisees’ skepticism and unbelief.
- Application:This passage invites us to reflect on our own spiritual sight. Are we open to receiving the truth of God’s Word and recognizing Jesus as the Son of God? Are we willing to obey His teachings, even when they may challenge our preconceived notions or go against societal expectations?
