Listen to this article

“The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.”

1. Context:The book of Jonah tells the story of the prophet Jonah who was called by God to go to the city of Nineveh and preach against its wickedness. Instead of obeying God’s command, Jonah tries to flee from God and boards a ship heading in the opposite direction. However, a great storm arises, and Jonah is thrown overboard by the sailors to calm the storm. It is in the belly of a great fish that Jonah offers a prayer of repentance, and Jonah 2:5 is part of this prayer.

The waters compassed me about: Jonah describes being surrounded by the waters. The phrase “compassed me about” implies being completely encircled or enclosed. This could symbolize the overwhelming circumstances or troubles Jonah found himself in.

Even to the soul: Jonah emphasizes the depth of his predicament, stating that the waters reached his very soul. It reflects a state of complete despair and distress. Jonah’s physical and emotional well-being were deeply affected, and he felt helpless and overwhelmed.

The depth closed me round about: Jonah expresses being enclosed by the depth or the depths of the sea. This signifies the sense of confinement and being trapped in a desperate situation. Jonah’s disobedience and attempt to escape God’s command had led him to this point of desperation.

The weeds were wrapped about my head: As Jonah describes his dire circumstances, he mentions that the weeds were wrapped around his head. This could indicate a physical entanglement and an added layer of discomfort and distress.

Overall, Jonah 2:5 captures the intensity of Jonah’s situation and his acknowledgment of being surrounded by the overwhelming forces of nature. It highlights the consequences of Jonah’s disobedience and his recognition of the need for deliverance and redemption.
