Listen to this article

And it came to passe, when Iabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that hee sent to Iobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, & to the king of Achshaph, Joshua 11:1 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Joshua describes the conquest of the Promised Land by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua, following the death of Moses. In Joshua 10, we read about the defeat of the southern coalition of kings by the Israelites. Joshua 11 continues the narrative, focusing on the northern campaign.

Jabin, King of Hazor: Jabin was the ruler of Hazor, a significant city in Canaan located in the north. Hazor was known for its military strength and strategic importance. Jabin heard about the victories of the Israelites in the south and realised that his city might be the next target.

Response of the Kings: In response to the imminent threat from the Israelites, Jabin sent messengers to Jobab, king of Madon, the king of Shimron, and the king of Achshaph. These kings were neighbouring rulers who prepared to confront the Israelites’ advance.

Significance: This verse highlights the growing concern among the Canaanite kings regarding the Israelite conquest. The news of the Israelites’ victories had spread, prompting them to prepare for battle.

God’s Faithfulness: Throughout the book of Joshua, we see God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to the Israelites. The conquest of Canaan was part of God’s plan to give the land to His chosen people. Despite the opposition faced by the Israelites, God remained with them and ensured their victory.

Application: Joshua 11:1 reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s faithfulness, even in the face of daunting challenges. Just as God was with the Israelites, He is with His followers today. We can take comfort in knowing that God goes before us in our battles, equipping us to overcome obstacles and achieve victory.

Overall, Joshua 11:1 serves as a transition verse, setting the stage for the upcoming battles between the Israelites and the northern kings. It highlights the response of the Canaanite kings as they prepare to confront the Israelite army.
