Joshua 11:21

Posted on 3 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.”

Context: The book of Joshua is set during the time when the Israelites were entering and conquering the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, after the death of Moses. This verse comes after a description of the extensive military campaigns Joshua and the Israelites undertook against various kings and nations in Canaan.

Joshua’s Leadership: Joshua, as the appointed leader of Israel, demonstrated strong military leadership and obedience to God’s commands. In this verse, we see Joshua taking decisive action against the Anakims, a group of giants who inhabited the mountains in different regions.

Anakims and their Defeat: The Anakims were descendants of Anak, who were known for their great height and strength. They posed a significant threat to the Israelites as they occupied strategic mountainous regions. Joshua and the Israelites, in obedience to God’s command, engaged in battle and completely destroyed the Anakims and their cities. This victory further secured the Israelites’ control over the land.

Symbolic Significance: The defeat of the Anakims carries symbolic meaning in the context of the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land. The Anakims represent the intimidating obstacles and challenges that stood in the way of the Israelites’ possession of their inheritance. Joshua’s victory over the Anakims illustrates the faithfulness and power of God in fulfilling His promises and helping His people overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Faith and Obedience: Joshua’s success in defeating the Anakims serves as a reminder of the importance of faith in God’s promises and the necessity of obedience to His commands. Joshua followed God’s instructions without wavering, leading to the complete destruction of the Anakims. This demonstrates the principle that victory and success are often the result of trusting God and faithfully carrying out His will.
