Joshua 11:22

Posted on 3 October 2024
Listen to this article

There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: onely in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. Joshua 11:22 (KJV)

The book of Joshua is part of the Old Testament and records the events surrounding the conquest of the Promised Land by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua. In this particular verse, Joshua is reflecting on the success of the Israelites in defeating the various kings and nations in the land. The Anakims were a group of people known for their tall stature. They were descendants of Anak, a figure mentioned in Numbers 13:22-33. The Anakims were among the inhabitants of Canaan, the land that God had promised to give to the Israelites. Joshua 11 recounts the military campaigns of the Israelites against the various kingdoms in Canaan. In verse 21, it states that Joshua and the Israelites “cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel.” So, by the time we reach verse 22, it states that there were no more Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel, except in three Philistine cities: Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

The victory over the Anakims was significant because they were formidable opponents due to their size and strength. Their defeat demonstrated God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites and their ability to overcome challenges through divine assistance.

God’s faithfulness: The conquest of the Anakims illustrates God’s reliability in keeping His promises. Despite obstacles, God remained true to His word and empowered the Israelites to prevail.

Trust in God’s strength: Overcoming the Anakims highlights the necessity of relying on God’s power rather than human capability. The Israelites could not have succeeded without divine intervention, teaching us to depend on God’s strength in our struggles.

Perseverance and obedience: The campaign required consistent obedience to God’s commands and persistence until victory was achieved. This underscores the importance of steadfastness and faithfulness in following God’s guidance.

Application:

Trust in God’s promises: Just as God fulfilled His promise to give Canaan to Israel, we can trust His promises for our lives. He is faithful and will never fail.

Seek God’s strength: When facing difficulties, turn to God rather than relying solely on personal abilities. He provides the strength and wisdom needed.

Persevere in obedience: Following God’s commands may be challenging, but we are called to remain obedient. Faithfulness to His Word and direction ensures victory in His timing.

It is important to note that while Joshua 11:22 states there were no Anakims left in the land of Israel except in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod, later biblical accounts such as Joshua 14 indicate that Caleb defeated Anakims in Hebron. This suggests their presence continued beyond the Philistine cities mentioned. Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult other study resources to gain a deeper understanding of the context and implications of Joshua 11:22.
