Joshua 11:3

Listen to this article

And to the Canaanite on the East and on the West, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Iebusite in the mountaines, and to the Hiuite vnder Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. Joshua 11:3 (KJV)

Joshua 11 describes the military campaigns led by Joshua and the Israelites against various Canaanite nations as they pursued the conquest of the Promised Land. In this passage Joshua is preparing for a major battle against a coalition of tribes that included the Canaanites on the east and on the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites in the mountains, and the Hivites under Hermon in the area known as Mizpeh. These peoples were spread across the territory God promised to Israel, with some dwelling in the mountains, others near Mount Hermon, and still others in the plains of Mizpeh, presenting significant obstacles to the Israelites as they sought to possess the land.

The account serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His covenant promise of giving the land to the Israelites. Despite the formidable opposition, God assured Joshua and the people that He would be with them and help them take possession of the land, and their victories fulfilled the covenant promises made to Abraham and his descendants.

Believers today are encouraged to trust in God’s promises just as the Israelites did. The tribes listed represent obstacles and challenges that we also encounter; Joshua’s example teaches us to rely on God’s strength and guidance when confronting difficulties, confident that He will enable us to overcome them.

The narrative also highlights the importance of unity among God’s people. The Israelites worked together under Joshua’s leadership to defeat the Canaanite coalition, and likewise believers are called to support and cooperate with one another in pursuing God’s purposes.

Historically, this passage records an important moment when Israel achieved victories over several Canaanite peoples, demonstrating God’s faithfulness and the fulfillment of His promises. Readers are encouraged to examine the surrounding verses and the entire chapter to gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and the broader narrative of the conquest of the Promised Land.
