Joshua 11:4

Posted on 3 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.”

Context:Joshua 11 describes the conquest of the northern kings in the land of Canaan under Joshua’s leadership. After the victory over the coalition of southern kings in Joshua 10, Joshua and the Israelites now face a formidable enemy alliance in the north.

The Power of the Enemy:The verse highlights the strength and vast numbers of the enemy forces. They had a massive army consisting of numerous people, horses, and chariots. The mention of their multitude is symbolic, emphasizing the great challenge the Israelites faced.

Faithfulness and Obedience:Despite the overwhelming odds, Joshua remained faithful to God’s command to take possession of the promised land. He trusted in God’s promises and believed that with God’s help, they could overcome any opposition. Joshua’s faith and obedience to God’s instructions provide an example for believers today to trust in God’s faithfulness and follow His guidance.

God’s Faithfulness and Provision:The sheer magnitude of the enemy forces might have discouraged Joshua and the Israelites, but they had witnessed God’s faithfulness throughout their journey. They had seen God’s miraculous interventions in the past, such as the parting of the Red Sea and the fall of Jericho. In the face of overwhelming odds, they could rely on God’s provision and intervention.

God’s Promises Fulfilled:Joshua 11:4 reflects the fulfillment of God’s promise to multiply the descendants of Abraham. In Genesis 22:17, God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the sand on the seashore. The mention of the enemy forces being “as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude” echoes this promise. The conquest of these enemies demonstrated the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His covenant promises.

Application:Joshua 11:4 encourages believers to trust in God’s promises, even in the face of daunting challenges. It reminds us that our faith should not be determined by the size of the obstacles before us but by the greatness of our God. Like Joshua, we should remain obedient to God’s commands, rely on His provision, and trust in His faithfulness to see us through difficult circumstances.

Overall, Joshua 11:4 highlights the power of the enemy, the faithfulness of Joshua and the Israelites, God’s provision, the fulfilment of His promises, and the importance of trust and obedience in our relationship with God.
