Joshua 13:2

Listen to this article

This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, Joshua 13:2 (KJV)

Context: The book of Joshua belongs to the historical books of the Old Testament. It records the events that followed the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and their entry into the Promised Land. In chapter 13 the major conquest was largely finished, Joshua was advanced in years, and God instructed him to divide the remaining land among the tribes of Israel.

Distribution of the Land: Joshua 13:2 points to the portion of the land that was still to be possessed. It mentions two specific regions—the borders of the Philistines and Geshuri. The Philistines were a long‑standing enemy of Israel, and Geshuri was an Aramean kingdom east of the Jordan River in the region of Bashan (today’s Golan Heights).

Unclaimed Territory: Although most of the territory had been conquered and allotted, these areas remained under Philistine and Geshurite control, indicating that the Israelites still had work to do in fully possessing the Promised Land.

Spiritual Application: The verse serves as a metaphor for the Christian journey. The Promised Land represents the abundant life and blessings God has prepared for His people. Just as Israel was called to take possession of the land, believers are called to appropriate and live out the fullness of God’s promises through faith.

Ongoing Battles: The presence of unconquered regions suggests that Israel had to continue engaging in battles. Likewise, Christians face ongoing spiritual battles and must persevere, continually seeking God’s guidance and relying on His strength to overcome obstacles and claim victory.

Perseverance and Trust: Joshua 13:2 reminds us of the need for perseverance and trust in God’s promises. The Israelites had witnessed God’s faithfulness and provision; they were to trust that He would go before them and enable them to possess the remaining territories.

Application to Today: In our own lives we may encounter areas that feel unconquered—personal struggles, unachieved goals, or unfulfilled dreams. This verse encourages us not to lose hope. Like the Israelites, we are called to trust God, work diligently, and persevere in pursuing His purposes.

Remember that studying the whole of Scripture and consulting related commentaries can deepen our understanding of God’s Word.
