From Aroer that is vpon the banke of the riuer Arnon, and the citie that is in the middest of the riuer, and all the plaine of Medeba vnto Dibon: Joshua 13:9 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the period after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River and entered the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership, following the death of Moses. Chapter 13 specifically details the division of the land among the tribes of Israel.

Aroer was a city situated on the bank of the river Arnon, which formed a boundary between the Moabites and the Amorites. The Bible does not record a specific Israelite capture of the city. The river Arnon flows through the territory of the Moabites and Amorites and is mentioned several times in the Old Testament. Medeba lay in the plains of Moab, east of the Dead Sea, and Dibon was another city in the same region.

Joshua 13:9 describes the boundaries of the land allotted to the Reubenites and the Gadites, two of the twelve tribes of Israel. The passage underscores the fulfillment of God’s promise to give the Israelites the land of Canaan. The division of the inheritance demonstrates God’s faithfulness to the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, showing that He keeps His word. Throughout Joshua we see God’s sovereignty as He directs the borders of each tribe, affirming His authority over the land and His concern for His people.

From this passage we learn to trust God’s promises, just as He fulfilled His pledge to give the Israelites their inheritance. Recognising God’s sovereignty reminds us that He controls all things, including the blessings and possessions we enjoy, and we should seek His guidance in how we use them. The Israelites received their inheritance by God’s grace; likewise, we are called to cultivate gratitude for all that God provides—our material blessings, spiritual inheritance in Christ, and daily provisions.

Readers are encouraged to explore the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a fuller understanding of the context and message of Joshua 13.
