Joshua 15:19
Who answered, Giue mee a blessing; for thou hast giuen mee a Southland, giue me also springs of water; and he gaue her the vpper springs, and the nether springs. Joshua 15:19 (KJV)
The narrative of Joshua records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel after the death of Moses. In this portion of the account the tribe of Judah receives its allotment, and Caleb, a faithful and courageous servant of God, is highlighted for his steadfast trust in God’s promises. Caleb and Joshua were the only two of the twelve spies who, forty years earlier, had believed that the land could be possessed (Numbers 13‑14). Because of that faith Caleb was granted a special inheritance, first requesting the hill country of Hebron in Joshua 14.
The verse in Joshua 15:19 introduces a further episode involving Caleb’s daughter, Achsah. She approaches her father and says, “Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water.” Water was essential for life and agriculture in the arid region, and her request reflects a desire for productivity and abundance in the land that God had already provided. Caleb honors her request and grants her both the upper springs and the nether springs, supplying the land with a reliable water source.
This brief exchange teaches several principles. First, it shows the importance of specific, heartfelt petitions. Achsah boldly asks for what she needs, trusting that God, through her father’s authority, will provide. Second, it underscores God’s generosity. The provision of springs in addition to the land demonstrates that God’s blessings often exceed basic necessities, offering abundance for those who walk in faith. Third, the story reinforces the value of unwavering trust. Caleb’s earlier confidence in God’s promise enabled his family to receive not only territory but also the means to sustain it.
Believers today can apply these truths by bringing their concrete needs before God, trusting that He is attentive to detail, and remembering that faithful obedience can lead to blessings that go beyond what is initially visible. The account of Achsah’s request and Caleb’s response invites us to rely on God’s provision, to ask boldly, and to rejoice in the abundant ways He supplies His people.
