Joshua 15:2

And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looketh southward:

Joshua 15:2 (KJV)

Joshua 15 records the division of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. This chapter gives the boundaries of the land allotted to Judah. Verse 2 begins the description of Judah’s southern border, starting from the shore of the Salt Sea, also known as the Dead Sea. This allocation was part of God’s promise to Abraham and his descendants, and the precise boundaries show the historical reality of Israel’s settlement in the Promised Land.

The “salt sea” is the Dead Sea, a body of water with such high salt content that almost nothing can live in it. The “bay that looketh southward” is a specific inlet or tongue of land pointing south. In Hebrew, the word for bay means “tongue,” suggesting a narrow strip or promontory that marked the boundary clearly. Some commentators see this as a rock or promontory pointing into the sea, a distinct landmark for the border.

The southern border of Judah began at this landmark and extended southward. This precise description shows that the land was divided with careful attention to natural features. God gave His people a real, measurable inheritance. The careful delineation of borders reflects the order and intentionality of God’s provision.

This allocation fulfilled God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would receive the land of Canaan (Genesis 15:18). The detailed borders demonstrate that God keeps His word in specific, tangible ways, not just in general terms. The land was not given vaguely; it was measured and assigned to each tribe.

God’s faithfulness in giving Judah a defined territory teaches us to trust His provision. He knows the exact boundaries of what He has entrusted to us, whether land, time, or abilities. We are called to be good stewards of these gifts, respecting the limits He sets.

The careful marking of borders also reminds us to seek God’s guidance in our own lives. Just as Israel depended on God for direction in dividing the land, we depend on Him to lead us in our decisions and relationships. We can trust that His boundaries are for our good.

This verse may seem like a simple geographical detail, but it reveals God’s order and intentionality. He does not leave His people without direction. Every boundary He sets is for our good and His glory.
