Kiriath-baal, which is Kiriathiearim, and Rabbah: two cities with their villages. Joshua 15:60 (KJV)

Joshua 15 records the allotment of land to the tribe of Judah after the Israelites entered the Promised Land. This chapter details the southern portion of Judah’s inheritance, describing the boundaries and the cities within their territory. Verse 60 specifically mentions Kirjath‑baal, also called Kirjath‑jearim, and Rabbah—two cities together with their surrounding villages.

Kirjath‑baal (Kirjath‑jearim) is identified in several passages of Scripture. The name “Kirjath‑jearim” means “city of forests” or “city of woods.” It lay on the border of Judah and Benjamin, roughly eight miles west of Jerusalem. The city played a notable role in Israel’s history as the temporary resting place for the Ark of the Covenant (1 Samuel 6:21) before the Ark was eventually brought to Jerusalem during King David’s reign (2 Samuel 6:2). Its association with the Ark underscores the reverence Israel had for God’s presence.

Rabbah, mentioned alongside Kirjath‑baal, should not be confused with the Ammonite capital of the same name (modern‑day Amman, Jordan). This Rabbah is understood to be a city within the tribal allotment of Judah. Although the biblical record provides limited detail about this particular Rabbah, it is recognized as part of the settled communities in Judah’s southern region.

Preservation of the Ark – The reference to Kirjath‑jearim reminds believers of the importance of preserving and honoring God’s presence. Just as the Ark was carefully guarded, Christians are called to cherish the presence of God in their lives.

Temporary Resting Places – The city’s role as a temporary dwelling for the Ark illustrates that seasons of transition are part of God’s providential plan. Believers can find encouragement in knowing that God remains with them during periods of waiting and preparation.

Faithfulness in Assigned Territories – The division of land among the tribes demonstrates God’s faithfulness in providing for His people. Likewise, each believer is entrusted with resources, talents, and spheres of influence that should be stewarded faithfully for God’s glory.

Recognizing God’s Sovereignty – Even where Scripture offers only brief mentions, such as Rabbah, the inclusion of these places affirms that God governs every region and purposefully includes all parts of His creation in His redemptive plan. As we navigate life, we can trust in His sovereign oversight over every circumstance.
