Joshua 15:9

Listen to this article

And the border was drawen from the top of the hill vnto the fountaine of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron, and the border was drawen to Baalah, which is Kiriath-iearim. Joshua 15:9 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the larger passage in the Book of Joshua that records how the Promised Land was allotted among the tribes of Israel. In this particular sentence the emphasis is on the borders that defined the inheritance of the tribe of Judah.

The Hill: The description begins with the border being drawn from the top of a hill. Although the specific hill is not identified, the phrase signals the starting point of the territorial line and underscores the use of prominent natural features as boundary markers.

The Fountain of Nephtoah: The next landmark mentioned is the fountain of Nephtoah. Its precise location is uncertain to modern scholars, but it would have been a well‑known water source that served as a clear and recognizable point along Judah’s frontier.

Cities of Mount Ephron: The border then proceeds to the cities of Mount Ephron. Mount Ephron is understood to be a hill within the hill country of Judah, situated in the southern part of the tribe’s allotment. It is distinct from Mount Seir, which belongs to Edom, and the cities associated with Ephron formed part of Judah’s inheritance.

Baalah (Kirjath‑jearim): The line concludes at Baalah, which is also called Kirjath‑jearim. The name Baalah means “city of Baal,” a designation that the Israelites did not endorse, while Kirjath‑jearim, meaning “city of forests,” is the name most frequently used in Scripture. This town lay within Judah’s territory and later became notable as the temporary resting place of the Ark of the Covenant after its return from the Philistines (see 1 Samuel 7:1‑2).

Overall Significance: While the passage primarily provides geographical detail, such information supplies essential historical context for understanding how God’s promises to Israel were physically realized. By studying these border descriptions we gain a clearer picture of the land that God gave to His people and see another facet of His faithfulness in fulfilling the covenant with Israel.
