Joshua 18:13

Listen to this article

And the border went ouer from thence toward Luz, to the side of Luz, (which is Bethel) Southward, and the border descended to Ataroth-Adar, neere the hill that lieth on the South side of the nether Beth-horon. Joshua 18:13 (KJV)

To understand this verse we must consider its broader context. The book of Joshua records the events that followed the death of Moses and the Israelite conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. After the initial allotment of land to the first tribes, Joshua assigned the remaining portions to the seven tribes that had not yet received their inheritance.

In Joshua 18:13 the passage describes the border of the tribe of Benjamin. The border is said to go out from a point toward Luz, to the side of Luz, which is Bethel, and then proceeds southward. Luz, also called Bethel, was a significant city in Israel’s history, famously the place where Jacob dreamed of a ladder reaching heaven (Genesis 28:10‑19). The verse continues that the border descended to Ataroth‑addar, a location near the hill that lies on the south side of the nether Beth‑horon. Some textual traditions render this as “Ataroth and Adar,” but the meaning remains the same: a landmark close to the southern slope of Beth‑horon.

Beth‑horon itself lay on the border between the territories of Ephraim and Benjamin, with Upper Beth‑horon belonging to Ephraim and Lower Beth‑horon to Benjamin. By naming such specific towns, hills, and valleys, the author of Joshua provides a precise map of tribal boundaries.

The purpose of these detailed descriptions is to ensure clarity and accuracy in the division of the land, guaranteeing that each tribe received the inheritance promised by God. The meticulous recording of borders demonstrates the Israelites’ commitment to honoring God’s covenant with the twelve tribes and underscores the importance of orderly settlement in the newly possessed land.
