Joshua 18:16
And the border came downe to the end of the mountaine, that lieth before the valley of the sonne of Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the Giants on the North, and descended to the valley of Hinnom to the side of Iebusi on the South, and descended to En-Rogel, Joshua 18:16 (KJV)
This verse is part of the book of Joshua that records the division of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel. In this section the territory allotted to the tribe of Benjamin is being defined. Understanding Joshua 18:16 requires looking at the broader context: after Joshua led the people across the Jordan River into Canaan, the land was to be distributed so that each tribe would receive its inheritance as promised by God.
Joshua 18 provides a detailed account of how the land was divided, with particular focus on Benjamin’s borders. The verse delineates both the southern and northern limits of Benjamin’s portion, using recognizable geographical landmarks to mark the boundary.
The first reference, “the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of Hinnom,” indicates the point where the border reached the terminus of a mountain that faced the valley of Hinnom. The valley of Hinnom lay just outside the southwestern walls of Jerusalem, serving as a natural marker for the tribe’s frontier.
Next, the text mentions “the valley of the giants on the north.” This points to the valley of the Rephaim, known as the valley of the giants, which lay to the north of the previous point. The border descended into this valley, establishing the northern extent of the territory.
The passage then says “the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south.” Here the border turns toward the valley of Hinnom again, this time on the southern side of Jebusi—another name for Jerusalem—thereby defining the southern boundary.
Finally, the verse records that the border “descended to En‑rogel.” En‑rogel was a location near Jerusalem, situated south of the Kidney Valley, and it marked the concluding point of Benjamin’s allotted land.
These geographical details were provided so that the Israelites would have a clear and precise understanding of the borders of their inheritance. While the verse is primarily descriptive rather than theological, it demonstrates the meticulous care with which the Israelites approached the distribution of land, ensuring that each tribe received its rightful portion according to God’s command.
In conclusion, Joshua 18:16 contributes to the overall narrative of the division of the Promised Land. By naming specific valleys, mountains, and towns, the verse establishes the exact limits of Benjamin’s territory and exemplifies the thoroughness with which God fulfilled His promise of inheritance to the people of Israel.
