Joshua 18:9

Listen to this article

And the men went, and passed thorow the land, and described it by cities, into seuen parts in a booke, and came againe to Ioshua to the hoste at Shiloh. Joshua 18:9 (KJV)

And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the LORD in Shiloh. And the children of Israel went up from Shiloh, and pitched in the hill country of Ephraim, and in the mountains of the Amorites, and in the hill country of the Geshurites, and in the hill country of the Canaanites, and in the hill country of the Perizzites, and in the hill country of the Hivites, and in the hill country of the Jebusites.

Historical Context: Joshua 18:9 takes place during the time when the Israelites had entered the Promised Land after the death of Moses. Joshua, who succeeded Moses as the leader of the Israelites, was tasked with dividing the land among the twelve tribes of Israel. At this point, several tribes were yet to receive their allotted inheritance.

The Division of the Land: In this verse, we see that the men were sent out to survey and describe the land. The survey was conducted to determine the allocation of land for each tribe, as Joshua would later cast lots to divide the land among the remaining tribes.

The Movement of the People: In this verse, we see that the Israelites moved from Shiloh to various hill regions inhabited by different peoples. Their travel and settlement in these areas were part of the broader process of allocating land to the tribes.

Diligence and Obedience: The men mentioned in the verse exemplify diligence and obedience. They carried out their task meticulously by going through the entire land and documenting its features. The people mentioned in the verse demonstrate diligence and obedience as they carried out their task of moving into the designated territories, reflecting their commitment to fulfilling the instructions given by Joshua and ultimately, by God.

Shiloh: The verse states that the men returned to Joshua at Shiloh. Shiloh was an important location in Israel at that time. It was the place where the tabernacle, the central place of worship, had been set up. The verse notes that the Israelites went up from Shiloh. Shiloh served as a central location for the community to assemble and receive guidance.

Lessons for us:

Diligence in our tasks: We can learn from the men who surveyed the land and from the Israelites who responsibly moved into the land. As Christians, we are called to work diligently in whatever tasks or assignments we are given, whether in our jobs, studies, or serving God and others.

Obedience to God’s instructions: The men in Joshua 18:9 followed the instructions given to them by Joshua, who was God’s appointed leader. Likewise, we should seek to be obedient to God’s Word and follow His guidance in our lives. Obedience to God brings blessings and aligns us with His will.

Seeking guidance in worship: Shiloh was the place where the tabernacle was located, representing the presence of God among His people. In our lives, we should prioritize seeking God’s guidance and spending time in worship and prayer. It is in His presence that we can receive clarity, direction, and peace.

Overall, Joshua 18:9 reminds us of the importance of diligence, obedience, and seeking God’s guidance in our lives. By emulating these qualities, we can walk in alignment with God’s will and experience His blessings.
