And Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, euen vnto great Zidon: Joshua 19:28 (KJV)

Hebron is a significant city in the land of Canaan, located in the hill country of Judah, and later became an important city in the territory of the tribe of Judah. It was also the place where Abraham lived and where the patriarchs were buried. Rehob is mentioned in this verse as one of the cities within Asher’s territory. Its exact location is uncertain but is generally believed to be in the northern part of Canaan. Hammon is another city mentioned here, with its specific location not definitively known but thought to be in the northern region of Canaan. Kanah is listed as another city within Asher’s territory, though its exact location is unclear. Zidon (also known as Sidon) was a prominent Phoenician city on the Mediterranean coast, known for trade and worship of the god Baal. While Zidon is mentioned as the northern boundary of Asher’s allotted land, it was not part of Asher’s inheritance itself. This verse emphasizes the specific cities and regions that were part of the territory assigned to the tribe of Asher, highlighting the fulfillment of God’s promise to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites and showing how the land was divided among the tribes. Understanding the broader context of the Bible, including historical and cultural background, is essential for a comprehensive understanding of its message.
