Joshua 19:43
And Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron, Joshua 19:43 (KJV)
Elon is mentioned only briefly in Scripture, and the biblical record does not provide extensive detail about its later significance. Thimnathah, also called Timnah, was another Danite city. It appears elsewhere in the biblical narrative, most notably in the story of Samson, the judge who married a Philistine woman from Timnah (Judges 14:1‑5). That marriage set in motion a series of conflicts between Samson and the Philistines.
Ekron was an important Philistine city, one of the five principal cities of the Philistine Pentapolis. Although situated within the Danite allotment, Ekron is repeatedly associated with Israel’s struggles against the Philistines. The Bible notes that the Israelites were unable to fully subdue Ekron during the conquest period (Joshua 13:3).
These three locations—Elon, Thimnathah, and Ekron—illustrate the geographical reality of the Danite inheritance. The division of land among the tribes was a concrete fulfillment of God’s promise to settle His people in the land He had promised to their ancestors. By naming these cities, the text provides a clear picture of the specific settlements that comprised the Danite portion of the Promised Land, underscoring both the fulfillment of divine promise and the ongoing challenges Israel faced in establishing its presence among neighboring peoples.
