Listen to this article

Yee haue not left your brethren these many dayes vnto this day, but haue kept the charge of the commandement of the Lord your God. Joshua 22:3 (KJV)

Context: The book of Joshua records the conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership after the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt. In Joshua 22 the Israelites have defeated their enemies and are now settling the land allotted to each of the twelve tribes. This verse belongs to Joshua’s address to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half‑tribe of Manasseh, who received inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan River.

Unity among the Tribes: The verse acknowledges the faithfulness of Reuben, Gad, and half‑Manasseh. Joshua commends them for not abandoning their fellow Israelites and for keeping the commandments of the Lord. It highlights the importance of unity among the tribes of Israel and their commitment to God’s instructions.

Responsibility to Fellow Believers: Though granted permission to settle beyond the Jordan, these tribes remained committed to their fellow Israelites, not neglecting their duty to support and defend them. Their example demonstrates the importance of standing by and supporting fellow believers even when circumstances might tempt separation or distance.

Obedience to God’s Commandments: Joshua notes that the tribes have kept the charge of the Lord’s commandments and statutes. This emphasizes that obedience to God’s law is the foundation for their faithfulness to one another, reminding believers that adherence to divine instruction is crucial for maintaining unity and the well‑being of the community.

Application: Joshua’s words invite us to examine our own lives and consider our commitment to unity and obedience within our faith communities. They remind us of the significance of supporting and encouraging fellow believers amid differing circumstances or challenges, and they call us to prioritize obedience to God’s commandments as a guide for righteous living.

In conclusion, Joshua 22:3 underscores the importance of unity among believers, the responsibility to support fellow believers, and the necessity of obedience to God’s commandments. Reflecting on these principles helps us foster unity, support, and obedience within our own faith communities.
