Joshua 22:8

Listen to this article

And he spake vnto them, saying; Returne with much riches vnto your tents, and with very much cattell, with siluer and with gold, and with brasse, and with iron, and with very much raiment: Diuide the spoile of your enemies with your brethren. Joshua 22:8 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account in the Book of Joshua where the Israelites had conquered the Promised Land, and Joshua was sending the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half‑tribe of Manasseh back to their inheritances east of the Jordan River after they fulfilled their military obligations. Joshua commended these warriors for their faithful service in helping the other tribes conquer the land west of the Jordan. He instructed them to return to their families and possessions on the eastern side, taking the spoils they had acquired during the conquest, which included riches, cattle, silver, gold, brass, iron, and clothing. By dividing the spoil of their enemies with their brethren they demonstrated unity and solidarity among the tribes, emphasizing their common heritage and shared destiny.

Faithful service: The warriors from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh fulfilled their responsibilities and served alongside their brothers. Their dedication and loyalty were recognised and rewarded. Likewise, as followers of Christ we are called to serve faithfully in our various roles and responsibilities within the body of believers.

Sharing blessings: Joshua’s instruction to divide the spoils of war with their brethren emphasises the importance of sharing blessings with others. This principle encourages generosity and consideration of the needs of others, promoting unity and a sense of community among believers.

Unity among believers: The tribes of Israel were one people, and Joshua wanted to ensure there was no division or animosity between the tribes on either side of the Jordan. By instructing the tribes to share the spoils, he promoted unity and reminded them of their common purpose and heritage. Likewise, Christians are called to maintain unity within the body of Christ, supporting and encouraging one another.

God’s provision: The spoils of war symbolise the provision and blessings that come from God. The Israelites’ success in battle was due to God’s presence and guidance. In the same way we should recognise that every good thing we have comes from God, be grateful for His provision, and acknowledge Him as the source of all our blessings.

In summary, Joshua 22:8 illustrates the importance of faithful service, sharing blessings, promoting unity, and recognising God’s provision. These principles remain relevant for believers today as we seek to serve God, build community, and acknowledge His blessings in our lives.
